National Schools Constitutional Convention

The National Schools Constitutional Convention opened today Newsroom Banner

One of ÐßÐßÊÓƵ's students, Chloe, was selected last year as one of South Australia’s representatives to participate in the National Schools Constitutional Convention.

The event was held in Canberra at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House from the 19-21st March this year.

The students discussed, debated, and voted on an amendment to Section 96 of the Constitution, allowing the Commonwealth to grant funds to areas outside of the prescribed Commonwealth powers.

Keynote speakers included Emeritus Professors of Constitutional Law from Canberra, Sydney, and Adelaide universities.

Students also enjoyed a tour of Parliament House, attended Question Time, a Prime Minister's Reception and an official reception at Government House.

Chloe’s comments about the event were :

"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I was given to attend the national school’s constitutional convention in Canberra. I worked with other students from across Australia and made many new and lasting friendships. I had the luxury of meeting the Governor-General and watching question time at Parliament House.

This event is an amazing experience, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in these areas."
