How to start a gratitude journal

Journaling is a great way to practise mindfulness and connect with your thoughts and feelings.

The steps for beginning your gratitude journal are:
1. Understand how to journal your gratitude
Gratitude is the emotion of feeling thankful for someone or something. Journaling about gratitude is a way of being intentional about experiencing gratitude.
2. Pick a journal
Choosing how you'll record your journal can be easy and fun! You can be as creative as you like in how you document your gratitude.
Do you have a nice book you could write in? Or maybe you'd rather draw pictures or record voice memos on your phone.
Pick the format you think will be the most enjoyable!
3. Focus on the benefits of gratitude
There are many benefits of experiencing gratitude. It can increase long-term happiness, improve mental and physical health, improve sleep and much more. Remember this and use it as motivation to continue to journal on the people and things you are grateful for.
4. Put time into your schedule
The key is to make time in your schedule for your gratitude journal. Aim to write down 3 things that you're grateful for each day.
5. Start small
We all go through tough times, and it can be difficult to find the positives when you’re feeling down. The great thing about keeping a gratitude journal is that it forces you to think about things you can be thankful for. These don’t even need to be big things!
Also, if you're having a hard day you can look back through it and remember all the good things in your life.
6. Get specific
The more detail you include the more you will get out of it. Talk about what you are grateful for and also why you feel gratitude. Be as descriptive as you can!
