Who is this course for?

Students pursuing careers in pure and applied mathematics, different engineering streams, and advanced science courses such as medicine, physics, and other natural sciences might find this course useful. The course is taken in conjunction with Stage 2 Mathematical Methods. It is assumed that students taking this course have a high level of self-efficacy, discipline, and perseverance. It is highly recommended that students complete stage 1 specialist mathematics before enrolling into this course.

What will I learn?

Students gain insight into and understanding of advanced mathematical tools that support their:

  • capacity to problem solve using advanced graphical and algebraic methods
  • ability to apply mathematical knowledge to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar scenarios
  • ability to decide how to approach new challenges using investigation, modeling, and reasoning
  • communication skills to describe the relationships observed in situations requiring mathematical reasoning

Topics:

  • Proof by using the Method of Mathematical Induction
  • Polynomials and Complex Numbers
  • Functions
  • Vectors in 3D and applications
  • Integral Calculus and Applications
  • Rates of Change and Differential Equations

How will I be assessed?

You will demonstrate evidence of your learning through the following assessment types:

  • Six Skills and Applications Tasks: 50%
  • One Mathematical Investigation: 20%
  • One Examination: 30%
