Who is this course for?

Students wanting to explore the everyday uses of the English language. It cultivates an understanding of a range of personal, social, cultural, and workplace based texts, and the ability to respond to these in a variety of forms.

Students will look at how we connect with other people in different forms and for different purposes.

What will I learn?

Students will learn how to connect with other people for different purposes through discussing, exploring and developing different ways of communicating in their personal, social, and work lives. They will create texts that may focus on issues of importance for them.

The course is divided into three areas:

1. Responding to Texts: students respond to a range of texts that instruct, engage, challenge, inform, and connect readers, considering information, ideas, and perspectives represented in those texts.

2. Creating Texts: students create procedural, imaginative, analytical, interpretive, or persuasive texts, expressing different points of view, ideas and information.

3. Language Study: students may choose their own focus area and develop texts that reflect their personal interests or future needs. These include workplace interactions, social networking sites, recreational pursuits and community or global issues.
